Aztec Anglers is the premier guide service and outfitter for fly fishing the San Juan River in Northwest New Mexico. Aztec Anglers is newly owned by Paul Freeman with Roughriderguide.net and Michael Mercurio from Flyfishpimp.com.  Paul and Mike are both experienced San Juan Flyfishermen.  Paul is a former guide on the San Juan guiding clients for 3 years on the river and is a professional fly tyer. The San Juan River Valley is rich in North American civilization history.  This is the land of the Navajo.  You’ll be fishing among the spirits and the petroglyphs of the “ancient ones”.  The Anasazi Indians roamed this area many centuries ago.  The Anasazi, who inhabited this area from about 200 to 1300 AD, descended from a prehistoric group of nomadic hunter-gatherers, dubbed the “Clovis” people, who hunted many animals such as mammoth, bear, rabbit and fish, possibly the first to migrate to the continent.  So, when your arm needs a rest from hauling in the monster trout of the San Juan our guides will be happy to discuss the history of this amazing region.

If you’ve never fly fished the West… we offer the perfect trip for you.  This is Western fly fishing at its best. This river is a desert version of a fly fishing paradox: big trout on tiny flies.  The San Juan is a hatch-matching dream, offering numerous hatches year round.  Our guides will show how its done out West.

We’ll guide through a stretch called “Lunker Alley”.  It didn’t get this name by accident.   Have you heard of the “Texas Hole”?  This is where the heaviest populations of trout are found in the long deep runs below fast riffles.  Baetis Bend, Frustration Point, Lower Flats.  You can see and fish it all.   We’ll take you there and show you all the secrets of getting these fish to take your fly.
