The Strater Hotel

The Strater Hotel is the centerpiece of your Durango Fly Fishing Vacation. Steeped in history as Durango’s most prominent downtown landmark, the Strater delivers world-class accommodations and hospitality.  Originally constructed in 1887, the Strater offers impeccably appointed Victorian rooms. The Hotel is ornamented with hand-screened Bradbury & Bradbury wallpapers and the world's largest collections of American Victorian walnut antique furniture.

From the moment you step into the lobby it's like entering another world. Authentic American Victorian antique furniture, crystal and lace transport you back to another century, to a romantic time in our frontier history when gold and silver were king and Victorian palaces like the Strater were a splash of opulence in an otherwise rough, tumble and often treacherous wild west.The hotel lobby is like a museum with display cases full of wonderful relics of the times from the Cliff Dwellers at Mesa Verde to the 1890's and early 1900's.

A superb restaurant and several lounges await you in the hotel.  The Strater is in walking distance of many local attractions including the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the Diamond Circle Melodrama, Main street shopping,  and historic 3rd Avenue.  In the summer, one of America's few remaining authentic Vaudeville melodramas provides a lively show nightly except for Mondays.

The Strater combines the best of the Victorian era's charm with snappy modern conveniences to make your stay special each time. Each room has its own bathroom and we do have an elevator.

Room Amenities - Though the Strater is over 100 years old, you can be certain that our rooms reflect all the modern conveniences you would expect such as, cable television, telephone with voice mail & data port, room service, many rooms have free hi-speed wireless internet connections, and of course all rooms have full bathroom facilities.

Victorian Style Hot Tub - The Strater features a beautifully appointed Victorian Style hot tub that is available by reservation for our room guests.

Free Deluxe Continental Breakfast - We are a Bed and Breakfast too! Enjoy our complimentary deluxe continental breakfast served daily. Featuring an array of pastries, fruites, Posole, hard boiled eggs and cheeses.

Free Parking - The Strater Hotel offers free parking around the hotel for all our hotel guests.

Entrees like Veal a la Forestiere, Broiled Elk Tenderloin in a Blackberry-Sage Sauce, Sautéed Ruby Red Colorado Trout, Lemon Chicken Tortellini and our famous Pepper Steak Herbert have made the Mahogany Grille a perennial favorite of locals and visitors alike. To top off a memorable meal, desserts include such items as a Crème Brule Tasting, excellent Bread Pudding or our signature item: The Chocolate Avalanche. Room Service - If you can't bear to leave your beautifully appointed Victorian room once you arrive, don't go hungry! Let the Strater bring dinner to your room. Room Service offers an exclusive menu of favorites from our exquisite menu. No Smoking Facility - The Strater Hotel does not offer accommodations for Smokers due to the plush upholstery and drapery that each room features.
